Since chiropractic's inception in 1895, chiropractic science has grown to major stature in the field of the healing arts and has reached millions of people. The modern Chiropractor works both directly and indirectly with the nervous system which controls every function of the body. Every organ, tissue, and cell is controlled by nerve impulses traveling from the brain to all parts of the body. These impulses are responsible for all movement, and make it possible for sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. The nervous system regulates the bodies temperature at 98.6 degrees, and even controls the liver, lungs, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder, and kidneys. Chiropractic acts to maintain optimal function in the nervous system, which is the master system in control of all other systems in the body.
Every science of healing has what is known as an avenue of approach. For example, in the field of medicine, a hypodermic needle injects drugs through the skin, or a pill is swallowed into the stomach. These are the avenues through which the drugs gain access to the body. In the field of Chiropractic, the avenue of approach is the spine. The spine houses and protects the spinal cord, the "switchboard" of the nervous system through which nerve fibers pass from the brain to different parts of the body. For every condition there must be a cause. If a person is ill, the condition is pain, regardless of the name applied to it. This is an effect for which there must be a cause. The nerves leave the spinal cord through openings between movable spinal bones called vertebrae. When vertebrae become misaligned through injury or postural problems, they interfere with the proper function of these nerves. This misalignment causes pain and malfunction of the nervous system and is called "subluxation". The subluxation is the cause of pain and dysfunction.
The objective of Chiropractic is to determine, through x-ray films and examination, the exact degree of spinal misalignment producing this subluxation. Proper chiropractic adjustments are given to remove these subluxations and the spinal misalignments producing the subluxation.... and thus remove the cause of pain and malfunction.
